Does car insurance cover towing a caravan?

Most comprehensive car insurance policies will cover you to tow a caravan, but usually only for third-party liability. This means that if your caravan becomes detached and hits into someone else's car, the damage to the other vehicle would be covered but damage to the caravan wouldn't.

It's important to check your policy wording to see if you are covered for towing a caravan and what the limits of your cover are. You may also need to pay an additional premium for towing.

What isn't covered by car insurance when towing a caravan?

As mentioned above, most comprehensive car insurance policies will only cover you for third-party liability when towing a caravan. This means that the following would not be covered:

  • Damage to your caravan
  • Personal injury claims arising from an accident involving your caravan

If you want to be fully covered when towing a caravan, you will need to take out dedicated caravan insurance

What are the pros and cons of having dedicated caravan insurance?

Pros:

  • Dedicated caravan insurance will cover you for a number of eventualities, including damage to your caravan, other vehicles or property, and personal injury claims.
  • Some premiums are usually very reasonable, especially when compared to the cost of repairing or replacing a damaged caravan.
  • It also can give you peace of mind knowing that you are fully covered in the event of an accident.

Cons:

  • You will need to pay an additional premium for caravan insurance.
  • You may need to pay an additional excess if you make a claim on your caravan insurance.
  • Some caravan insurance policies have restrictions on the type of caravan you can tow and the weight of the caravan. ** Amtrust policy wording it states:  YOU TOWING YOUR CARAVAN IF YOUR CARAVAN WEIGHS IN EXCESS OF 100% OF THE TOWING VEHICLES KERB WEIGHT This would be extremely unlikely that a Caravan would weigh more than the towing vehicle

If you are planning on towing a caravan, it is important to do the following:
