Before you step off the shore onto your boat this summer, you must make sure you are completely prepared to tackle the waves and any issues that may occur. Our 10 step safety checklist neatly covers everything you need to cover before setting sail.

  1. Wear a life jacket: Life jackets can save your life in an emergency, so make sure everyone onboard wears one that fits well.
  2. Check the weather: Always check the weather forecast before heading out on the water. Avoid boating in bad weather, high winds, or storms.
  3. Prepare for emergencies: Have safety equipment on board, including a first aid kit, flares, and a fire extinguisher. Make sure everyone knows how to use them in case of an emergency.
  4. Use caution when fuelling: Turn off the engine and all electronic devices when fuelling, and never smoke or use an open flame near the fuelling area.
  5. Know your boat's capacity: Overloading your boat can cause instability and increase the risk of capsizing. Make sure you know your boat's capacity and don't exceed it.
  6. Keep a safe distance: Always keep a safe distance from other boats, swimmers, and obstructions in the water to avoid collisions.
  7. Be aware of your surroundings: Keep an eye out for changes in the water conditions, such as tides, currents, and waves.
  8. Avoid alcohol: Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It can impair your judgment, balance, and coordination, and increase the risk of accidents.
  9. Check your boat's equipment: Regularly inspect your boat's equipment, including lights, horns, and navigation systems. Make sure everything is in good working order.
  10. Have boat insurance: Boat insurance can provide financial protection in case of accidents or damage to your boat.
